Joe Herbert

Joe Herbert is co-founder and co-director of Groove Society. He's the former Director of Vocal Jazz at Metropolitan State College of Denver.  He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in theory and composition from the University of Northern Colorado, and has worked as a clinician and adjudicator at jazz festivals, and jazz camps throughout the United States.  While singing with UNC’s Grammy-nominated ensemble, Vocal Jazz 1, Joe won several prestigious Downbeat Magazine Awards.  Since then, his arrangements and originals have become widely popular with high school and college jazz choirs around the world.

Joe now spends much of his time creating a fresh sound for acappella groups around the world; exploring new ways to exploit the human voice utilizing intricate rhythms and extended jazz harmonies. In addition to writing and arranging, Joe is also an accomplished jazz and Latin trumpeter in the Denver area, and draws on this instrumental background to enrich his writing and singing style.

LaDamion Massey

Damion has been singing professionally since the age of twelve. He started out as a young boy singing in his church choir and continued singing gospel music throughout high school. This experience formed the musical foundation upon which he has built. At the University of Northern Colorado, Damion studied voice with Dr. Diane Bolden-Taylor. He worked up his classical chops singing in Men’s Glee and Concert Choir and performing in opera productions such as La Traviata, Madame Butterfly and La Boheme. It was during his time at UNC that Damion discovered his great love of jazz and vocalists like Sarah Vaughn. He worked his way into the elite vocal jazz group, Et Cetera, where he performed extensively and eventually shared the stage with the New York Voices.

As Groove Society’s bass, he lays down a rock solid pocket in which the ensemble can place itself. Whether simulating a walking acoustic bass or a funk electric slap bass, the sound is authentic and the time is impeccable. As a soloist, Damion’s diverse musical experiences and charismatic personality come shining through. His warm, smooth tone wraps itself around listeners, enveloping them in a blanket of sweet, soulful sound.

Dave Sheehan

“Versatility” is the best word to describe Dave’s roll with Groove Society. Most often, he adeptly sings the bass part, but with his exceptionally broad range, he covers the tenor  part when necessary. He has been involved with music since he was a child and has been influenced by such jazz greats as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Take 6, and Sarah Vaughan. He is thankful for his father always introducing new artists like these to him.

Dave holds a degree in music education from the University of Northern Colorado and currently enjoys teaching music at Franklin Elementary School. While at UNC, Dave was deeply involved in the choral program and with the music of Campus Crusade for Christ. He also served in UNC’s student chapter of their music education organizations, and was a member of the vocal jazz groups Et Cetera and Vocal Jazz I. He is grateful for the professors who have always been such a huge influence there.

Since graduating, Dave has been involved in performing with various churches and has sung with the Singers Master Chorale, where he received critical acclaim as a feature soloist in Mozart’s Requiem. Lately, one of Dave’s favorite positions in the music world has been as a judge with Colorado’s All-State Vocal Jazz Choir.

                                                     Jeremy Ruff

Jeremy was deep into acappella since going to Boulder High School & also Colorado University of Boulder singing with the group Mile 21. Mixing it up with baritone parts along with vocal percussion he was heavily influenced by an interest in all musical genres. His love of creating a new and unique sound and mimicing sounds he heard throughout his day to day life has garnered him an uncanny ability to serve as a vocal percussionist for Groove Society. He studies the recording arts at Full Sail University and continued his education in honing his skills to listen to detail and to recreate it with his mouth. He currently lives in Nashville.
